FIRST ASCENTS

Have you always be drawn to the idea of establishing your own rock climbs? Doing a first ascent can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a climber's career, but if done poorly, can be an unsafe and unaesthetic addition to a climbing area. The goal of this unique course is to provide participants with all of the necessary skills to establish a single pitch sport climb (these concepts may be applied to crack climbs as well). The program is best suited to experienced lead climbers who are prepared to undertake the responsibility of establishing rock climbs for the community to enjoy. Instructional topics include:

  • First ascent hazards and safety concerns.
  • Review of anchors, rope ascending and rappelling.
  • Selecting a climb and route preparation.
  • Using directional placements (pitons and gear).
  • Protection strategies and considerations for a sport climb.
  • The mechanics of a bolt placement (expansion and glue-in).

When possible, this day will conclude with the first ascent of a short sport climb, the joint effort of the participants and the guide.
